The Basics

In plain English: COVID-OUT Trial is a randomized controlled trial that aims to keep COVID from getting worse in people age 30-85 who just tested positive within the past 3 days. The study is contactless (meaning you can be in it from anywhere in the U.S. or Canada without a hospital visit or leaving home). Medication and study supplies are shipped overnight by FedEx or, if you live near one of the study sites, brought to your door.

Study design: The clinical trial is testing three medications considered most promising for keeping COVID-19 from getting worse: metformin, fluvoxamine, and ivermectin. Study participants in 5 of the 6 groups get medication (or a combination) and one group receives a placebo.

What’s in it for you? 83% chance of getting a medication that might keep you from getting as sick; 100% chance of helping humanity. And $400 reimbursement.

How it works

If you meet those requirements above and decide to be in the study:

  • No clinic or office visits are required.
  • You’ll get a safe dose of the study drug (or placebo pill) to take for 14 days.
  • You’ll record how you feel and your blood oxygen each day.
  • You’ll fill out a survey about how you’re feeling about a month after the start.

Things to know:

  • There is no cost.
  • You will receive $200 for participating in the 14-day study, and an additional $200 ($20 each) for completing 10 monthly follow-up surveys that study Long-Covid prevention.
  • If you are pregnant, you may participate in this study.
  • One of the study meds makes caffeine stronger and last longer. So you may want to stop caffeine while you are in this study.
  • Full information is available on the university’s official site or the study’s official ClinicalTrials.gov government listing
