Memory Loss Treatment Study
at Houston Methodist

Memory changes? Looking for a treatment?

Join a study testing L-Serine, a dietary supplement that may slow brain changes.

If you have memory problems, are still independent in most of your activities, and want to prevent worsening, you could be a good candidate.

Is this you? (or your loved one?)

  • Memory and thinking changes you can feel, even if other people don’t always notice
  • 55-90 years old
  • With or without a diagnosis of “Mild Cognitive Impairment” (MCI)
  • Already been checked for other common causes of memory problems (such as strokes, low thyroid or iron, ferritin below 50, really high blood pressure, or old head injuries)
  • Still mostly able to take care of yourself
  • Good at taking pills and setting up reminders
  • Able to travel to Houston Methodist Hospital 3 times in 6 months

Who can't be in the study?

  • People whose memory problems have already progressed to full Alzheimer’s
  • People who’ve had a diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment for too long already (more than 3 years)
  • People whose memory problems are from other brain issues (such as strokes, tumors, or head injuries)
  • People who haven’t gotten other health problems treated that might be causing their memory issues (such as anemia, low thyroid, or side effects from statins)
  • People with cancer

What's involved?

  • First class medical attention – no more waiting
  • Thorough intake testing and two follow-ups at Houston Methodist
  • Taking gummies 3 times a day for 6 months
  • The gummies contain a safe dietary supplement (amino acid L-serine) that has helped slow memory loss in animal studies
  • Caring study staff and Alzheimer’s experts to answer questions
  • The study is free
  • $400 reimbursement at the end

What's special about this study?

  • The drug has already helped in animal studies
  • It’s known to be safe (people with sleep problems and nerve problems already take it)
  • The study is by a nonprofit research institute, not a pharmaceutical company
  • Could result in a low-cost treatment available to people all over the world
  • Your chance to leave a legacy by finding a new treatment

What if I don’t have a diagnosis of MCI?

If you have already had tests to rule out other common causes of memory issues, study staff can help you get set up with MCI testing at Houston Methodist Hospital.

Can I fly in from another city to be in this study?

Yes!
