Rabbit sterilization with calcium chloride

Linda Brent, PhD

Executive Director, Parsemus Foundation

Could calcium chloride sterilization be used by rabbit rescue organizations, to spare the trauma and expense of surgery? On Sunday the first rabbit ever got calcium chloride nonsurgical neuter. The most important factor is the handling– rabbits can be calm once they’re wrapped snug in a towel (an old Temple Grandin trick). This rabbit didn’t react to the needle prick of the fine insulin needle, and he seemed fine afterwards. The rabbit’s guardian was pleased that the procedure was so minimally stressful. If it works well, it could save rabbit rescue organizations a lot of time, coordination, and money, and save rabbits a lot of stress and transport!
