Obesity affects an estimated 59% of US dogs and drives higher rates of arthritis, diabetes, heart and lung disease, and certain cancers, while cutting years off a dog’s life. Standard treatment for dog obesity — calorie restriction plus exercise — works in theory but is hard for owners to sustain. Two newer approaches are now being studied: a GLP-1 drug (liraglutide) and a gut-bacteria supplement (pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila), both already used for weight loss in humans. Neither is ready for routine veterinary use yet, but diet quality and hormonal status remain important levers for prevention.
Dog obesity statistics: why so many dogs carry extra weight
Dog obesity has become one of the most common health problems in American households. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention’s 2022 survey, 59% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese. A separate analysis led by Texas A&M University and the Dog Aging Project found that roughly half of US dogs carry excess weight, with breed, environment, and food motivation all playing a role. These numbers have climbed steadily over the past few decades, and veterinarians increasingly call canine obesity a disease in its own right, not just a cosmetic issue.
Calorie restriction and exercise for dog weight loss
For years, veterinarians have treated dog obesity the same way: cut calories and add exercise. This approach works in principle; a dog that burns more energy than it eats will lose fat. In practice, though, it’s hard to pull off. Owners must weigh food precisely, resist begging, and commit to daily walks for months. Many dogs regain the weight once a program ends. Success also depends heavily on the household’s schedule and follow-through, which makes consistent results difficult to guarantee across different dogs and families.
Why obesity in dogs deserves more attention: the health risks
Extra weight does more than slow a dog down. It raises the risk of a long list of serious conditions. Veterinary researchers have linked dog obesity to shorter lifespans and a wide range of comorbidities (or coexisting conditions). This combination of risks is why researchers now search for new, more effective tools to help dogs lose weight and keep it off.
GLP-1 drugs for dogs: what a new liraglutide study found
One of the most closely watched experimental approaches borrows directly from human obesity medicine. A 2025 clinical study of senior dogs published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine tested liraglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist already used to treat obesity and diabetes in people. Researchers divided 21 neutered Golden Retrievers aged 8–10 years into three groups of seven. One group stayed at a healthy weight on a standard diet. The second group had obesity and received a calorie-controlled diet alone. A third group had obesity and received the same calorie-controlled diet plus daily subcutaneous liraglutide, at a dose of 1.2 mg per dog, for 40 days.
By day 40, the liraglutide group had a better body condition score and less body weight than before treatment. Compared with untreated obese dogs, the liraglutide group showed an approximately 13% lower body weight by day 40, although this difference was not statistically significant. Liraglutide did produce clearer results elsewhere: it significantly lowered the body condition score, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels and suppressed appetite.
No vomiting, diarrhea, or other clinically important adverse effects were observed during the 40-day study.
A gut-bacteria supplement for dog obesity: the Akkermansia muciniphila study
A second 2026 study, published in Microbiology Spectrum, took a different approach: targeting the gut microbiome instead of appetite hormones. Researchers gave 20 healthy beagles a high-calorie, high-fat, high-protein commercial diet at roughly three times their normal energy needs for eight weeks, deliberately driving weight gain to model real-world overfeeding. Half the dogs also received a daily dose of pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila MucT, a “postbiotic” already shown to improve metabolic health in obese humans and rodents. The goal was to see whether this supplement could prevent diet-driven weight gain and the inflammation that comes with it. Two previous studies using a similar protocol found positive results with different preparations of Akkermansia muciniphila.
The postbiotic treatment reduced weight gain in dogs with a high-calorie diet. Dogs receiving the supplement gained noticeably less weight than the control group over the first six weeks (14.3% versus 18.7%, on average), and this gap remained statistically significant across the full eight-week study, meaning it was unlikely to be due to chance. The supplement also reduced markers of gut and systemic (body-wide) inflammation, including fecal calprotectin and several inflammatory blood proteins, and altered gut bacteria associated with changes in bile acid metabolism. Notably, this study did not test dogs that already had obesity; it tested whether the supplement could prevent excess weight gain in healthy dogs during overfeeding, a meaningfully different question than treating existing obesity.
Weighing the pros and cons of these new dog obesity treatments
Both approaches borrow credibility from human medicine, but each has real limits. GLP-1 drugs like liraglutide already have an enormous human safety record — millions of people have taken semaglutide, liraglutide, or tirzepatide for diabetes or obesity — which gives veterinarians a head start on dosing and monitoring. But the canine trial was limited (only seven dogs of a single breed per group followed for 40 days), and while nausea, the most common human side effect, wasn’t noted, a study of dogs over a longer treatment period is needed to fully understand side effects.
The Akkermansia supplement appears simpler, since it works through diet rather than injections, and postbiotics have a strong human and rodent safety track record. However, it was tested only in healthy dogs to prevent weight gain, not in dogs that already have obesity, and the study was funded by the supplement’s manufacturer, a conflict of interest worth noting. Because this was a small proof-of-concept study performed under tightly controlled feeding conditions, additional studies in household dogs will be needed before the findings can be generalized. Neither treatment has FDA approval for canine obesity.
The authors of both studies noted that larger, independently funded trials, in more diverse dogs, over longer periods are needed before either reaches routine veterinary use.
Beyond medication: diet changes and hormone-sparing sterilization for dog obesity prevention
Drugs and supplements are not the only avenues worth watching. Some owners and veterinary nutritionists have moved away from traditional dry kibble toward human-grade foods (raw or lightly cooked), hoping to avoid preservatives/fillers and support healthier body weight and digestion. But evidence comparing fresh, homemade, raw, and commercial diets for long-term weight control remains limited. One study reported that balanced, homemade diets were related to significant improvements in weight loss, coat condition, and gastrointestinal and dermatological pathologies. Other studies have found that some homemade diets are not nutritionally complete and that some raw diets have bacterial contamination. The larger research pool on commercial diets points to some simple adjustments — like measuring meals instead of free-feeding, cutting treats to a small share of daily calories, and choosing higher-protein, higher-fiber commercial diets designed for weight loss — as reliable dietary tools.
One less obvious obesity risk factor deserves more attention: the hormonal status of spayed and neutered dogs. Traditional spay and neuter surgery removes the ovaries or testes entirely, cutting off the natural hormone production that helps regulate metabolism. Research links this loss of natural hormones to a higher risk of obesity, along with other conditions such as certain cancers and orthopedic problems.
Hormone-sparing sterilization methods — hysterectomy (also called ovary-sparing spay) for females and vasectomy for males — sterilize dogs while leaving their natural hormone production intact. For owners weighing sterilization options, discussing hormone-sparing procedures with a knowledgeable veterinarian is a step worth considering alongside diet and exercise in the broader effort to prevent dog obesity.
